Chennai got 137.5 million litres of water through trains from Jolarpet

From 12th of July 2019, southern railways have been operating water special trains from Jolarpet to Chennai city for the purpose of transporting water is well known. It is revealed that southern railways have now operated 55 trips from the above said date and the city of Chennai has received 137.5 million litres till 14th August 2019.

It should be taken into account that 2 rakes carry water 204 km from Jolarpet to Villivakkam in Chennai and from Villivakkam metro water supplies it to the households belonging to the western parts of Chennai. There are 50 wagons present in every rake and each has the ability to carry as much as 55,000 litres of water. On a single trip, every rake could carry 2.75 million litres but the actual load is 2.5 million litres. It has been pointed out by the officials belonging to the railways that for each trip the southern railways charges Rs 8.6 lakhs and it has earned Rs 4.73 crores till now.

It is worthy to note that in a 24 hour cycle each rake completes one trip and Chennai gets 5 million litres of water every day from jolarpet. As many as 3 trips are completed in single day also. This was as per a source belonging to railways.

The Chennai- Bengaluru-Mumbai sector is very busy with many suburban, express trains plus other goods trains etc are known. It takes 4 hours for the water to be brought from Jolarpet to Villivakkam in Chennai as the route is very busy. Loading and unloading of water also takes long time and this was confirmed by a senior official. Point to be noted is metro water claims to maintain a supply of around 525 million litres of water every day to the residents in the Chennai city. It is said that the water brought by the trains accounts for barely 1% of this.
