The news that Chennai metro water is working with consortium of many academic institutions to prepare a DPR report to utilize recycled water for recharging the water bodies has been the topic for discussion for many now.
It is now revealed that in another 4 years of time nearly 60% of sewage generated in the Chennai city might be recycled for industrial and indirect reuse.
Information collected is metro water has proposed to construct waste water reclamation plants in places like Kodungaiyur, Koyambedu, Nesapakkam and Perungudi to convey 260 million litres per day or mld of reclaimed waste to nearby lands. By this, the fresh water demand would be reduced plus it would be possible to tap large volumes of sewage as resource for rejuvenation of the lakes.
In places like Nesapakkam and Perungudi next week, metro water would start the construction of 10mld tertiary treatment plant. This would be as a pilot plant aimed at indirect use of rain water. Recycled water would be blended into Porur and Perungudi lakes.
It is worthy to mention that the recycled water would be blended with fresh water in the lakes in the ratio of 1:100 and again pumped to be treated and distributed through the drinking water supply network. Since every component of the project including volume, point of intake, and design of the structures along the lakes had to be approved by the IIT-Madras, there has been delay in the beginning of the work and this was as per the officials belonging to the MWD. Point to be noted is by January 2020 the project would be ready and the infrastructure would further be expanded to generate 260 mld to recharge lakes.
Recommendations for holistic planning and reuse of waste water would be presented at the consortium having experts from various academic institutions. The consortium would suggest specific locations for treatment plants, sewage treatment technology and monitor the quality of reclaimed water and its impact on the lakes.
There are lakes present in Kovilambakkam, Narayanapuram, Kilkattalai and Ayanambakkam and the treated water from the 4 water waste reclamation plants would be released into the lakes in the above said 4 places in Chennai. For the indirect use of recycled water, decentralised water treatment plants would be constructed. For renovating the present sewage treatment plants to meet the norms of CPCB or Central Pollution Control Board, tenders have been called is known.
It is brought out that the treatment technology would be upgraded to bring down total suspended solids and biochemical oxygen level to less than 10 mg per litre. It is superb to note that the 45 mld capacity tertiary treatment plant located at Koyambedu is in the last stages of completion. Industrial belt in Sriperumbudur would be supplied by this plant at Koyambedu.
