The information is GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation would soon be setting up as many as 67 parks in this financial year. It is revealed that these new parks would give breathing space to the added areas. By the month of April in 2020, 23 parks would be ready.
By clearing plots of vacant lands, as many as 200 new parks would be set up in Chennai. This was as per the corporation commissioner of Chennai, Mr. G. Prakash. He spoke about how these new parks would be set up as per the announcement from the government. The important advantage of setting up new parks is the lung space of Chennai would be improved. Chennai mega city development mission has been providing funds for the new parks.
The corporation commissioner then hinted about how the upcoming parks would have facilities like compound walls, walking pathways, greenery, children’s play equipments, open gym, yoga stage plus other facilities like water supply, drainage, RWH structures, compost pits, toilet facilities etc. Point is the presence of above said facilities in the new parks would be on par with those parks located in many core places.
For 23 parks, tenders have been called for and the new parks would be set up in all the zones with maximum number of parks 13 in Ambattur, 11 in Sholinganallur, 10 each in Perungudi and Madhavaram. In addition to these parks, as many as 13 play grounds would also be set up in 15 core places belonging to Chennai city. This project of setting up of parks would be of superb benefit for the residents. This was confirmed by secretary of Ambattur Welfare Association, Mr. Suresh. Information collected is it was in the year 2015 parks were last set up in Ambattur.
Mr. Suresh spoke about how there are just 4 good parks but the zone is 45 sq km approximately in area. He was unhappy regarding the absence of single playground in the entire zone. He concluded that only if the civic body provides more recreational facilities then the quality of life would improve.
It was later pointed out by a resident belonging to Perungudi that maintenance of the parks is very important and corporation must ensure this. He commented about how in the past parks were not maintained well. He cited the example of Madhavaram Park in the Milk Colony.
As many as 400 open spaces have been identified by the corporation in Chennai city and these would e developed as parks and playgrounds. Chennai Corporation has got 632 parks is known. It is amazing to mention here that the city of Mumbai and Delhi has got more than 1000 parks and Bengaluru has got 721 parks and this was as per 2019 figures.
