Renovation of Egmore Railway Station to be completed in 1 year!

One of the most popular and well-known and busy Railway Stations in the Chennai Metro City, the Egmore Railway Station is all  set to get completely renovated under the Redevelopment Projects.

The related activities are already in progress. The Railway administration has planned to complete the renovation work within one year.

Among the oldest and busiest Railway Stations in Tamil Nadu/Chennai, the Egmore Railway Station was built in 1908. It had developed gradually with the passing years/decades to become one of the most prominent railway stations.

It is the main transportation centres for the south and central district residents of Tamil Nadu. 66 trains are operated daily from Egmore Railway Stations. Out of this, 32 trains start from Egmore Railway Station. The balance 34 trains pass through Egmore Railway Station.

Especially, some important express trains such as Pandian, Nellai, Kanyakumari, Podhigai, Muthunagar, Rameswaram, Malaikkottai, Vaigai, and Pallavan start from the Egmore Railway Station. In the return mode, all the express trains start from the south and central districts of Tamil Nadu and reach the Chennai Egmore Railway Station.

Apart from the above, trains to northern states also pass via Egmore Railway Station. With such a busy schedule, around 1.5 Lakhs people pass through this Railway station every day! With the increasing trend of the number of passengers every day, representatives from several sectors appealed for the renovation and additional facilities in Egmore Railway Station.

The Railway administration, on receipt of these demands, had promised that the renovation and provision of additional facilities will be carried out.

In this scenario, under the ‘Railway Stations redevelopment Projects’, Egmore Railway Stations is set to get renovated at a cost of Rs. 15 Crores.

There are 11 platforms in Egmore Railway Station. The Platform Nos. # 1 to # 6 are under region#1 and the platform nos. # 7 to # 11 are under Region#2. Renovation works are under progress here.

The renovation project includes the renovation of the station surroundings, passengers’ waiting room, and the restroom and lodging areas. Electric crane, paving granite floors on the platforms, display boards on all the platforms will all be provided/carried ut.

A modern 2-wheeler parking arrangement, stainless seating arrangements on all platforms will be provided. Further, the foot overbridge in the station will be widened.

Widening of the foot overbridge:

In this regard, the concerned officials explained that escalators are to be installed upon platforms #7, #8, and #9.  Presently, the escalator installation work is in progress in platforms #7 and #8.

Further, the foot overbridge will be widened from the present 2 metres to 6 metres.

2 Electric cranes will be installed facing the Gandhi-Irwin Road from the station. The entire renovation work is planned to be completed within 1 year.

Renovation work in 6 railway stations

Renovation work of 6 railway stations - the Chennai Egmore, Trichy, Salem, Madurai, Kottayam, and Palakkad – are to be taken up at a cost of Rs. 121.43 Crores.
