During a debate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Grants for the Ministry of Commercial Taxes, the Tamil Nadu Food Grains Merchants Association (TNFGA) requested a re-look into VAT (value added tax) and also discussed the inclusion of tax exemptions.
A memorandum submitted by the Association said, ‘While appreciating the gesture of levy of no new taxes and not increasing the existing tax rates in the State Budget and agreeing to the demand of granting tax exemption for cooking oil, a lot of food products have been enjoying tax exemptions in the State and as such, tax exemptions and reduction of taxes of certain items of food products are necessary - such as flour items, byproducts of wheat items, reduction of tax on cardamom to two per cent from five per cent, tax exemption on Rice Adai made from rice flour and exemption from levy for cottonseed and so on.’
