In July 2019, it was announced by the chief minister of TN that Kancheepuram district would be bifurcated to form new district with Chengalpet as its headquarters.
It is now said that by the month of January in 2020 the new Chengalpet district might be formed. On the southern peripheries of Chennai city are located place like Pallavaram, Tambaram, Tiruporur, Thirukalukundram and Chengalpet Taluks etc and the new Chengalpet district would comprise these places.
Information is Kancheepuram district administration is speeding up this process now and this was as per the revenue department sources. It must not be forgotten that on 20th August 2019, the government made huge noises when it conducted a hearing over the bifurcation of the district to get the views of the public.
It was mentioned by an official of the revenue department that a report is being made based on this public hearing and the report would be sent to the commissioner of the revenue administration. He added that the process is taking place very fast and the government order to create Chengalpet district is likely to be passed before January in 2020.
It must be noted that out of 4 divisions of Kancheepuram district Chengalpet and Tambaram are likely to be part of Chengalpet district. Point here is the new district would have independent administration set up inspite of the fact that Chengalpet did not have a corporation to address the civic woes.
It is known that the state government initiated the process to merge local bodies in and around Pallavaram and Tambaram to create a municipal corporation headquartered at Tambaram. After the change of guard in 2011 with AIADMK coming to power, this did not take place.
In the southern suburbs beyond Pallavaram the absence of underground drainage has been a major problem and this was as per Mr. Viswanathan, convenor of Chitlapakkam Residents Welfare Associations Coordination Committee.
