Getting more manpower to do a certain job takes place in many sectors. Many motorists do not follow traffic rules and they get penalized. The point is soon Chennai city police would get more manpower in penalising the motorists violating the traffic rules.
On Thursday, 5th September 2019, a GO was issued and the order empowered officers in the rank of special sub inspectors and above in the Law & Order wing of city police also to collect spot fines from the traffic rule violators. It must be taken into account that till now traffic police and transport officials were authorized to collect spot fines for traffic violations in Chennai. More policemen are now deployed by the Chennai city police on the roads to keep an eye on the violators.
Information is outside Chennai city till now sub inspectors rank officers only collected spot fines from the traffic violators. From now on, as per the new GO SSIs belonging to Law & Order wings would also collect spot fines.
According to Mr. Arun, additional commissioner of police, it is clear that Chennai would get around 350 SSIs who would be given rights to issue challans to the traffic violators. By engaging more officers, the police would be able to enforce the traffic rules among the motorists. He threw light on how the Chennai city police have already received 350 e-challan machines and how these machines were distributed among 200 sub inspectors and inspectors attached to the traffic wing. He concluded that all the e-challan machines would be utilized as there is more reserve personnel.
It is important to note that the government also authorized transport officials in the rank of motor vehicle inspectors (grade2) and above to collect spot fines for the traffic related offences. In the backdrop of the order from the High Court, GO was issued is known.
At the RTO check posts in the inter-state borders, only motor vehicle inspectors (non-technical) are allowed to collect fines. As the transport department has got fee collection centres at the RTO check posts, the police would not be allowed to collect spot fines.
