First-class coaches at the front and rear side only of 12-car EMU

If you are an EMU traveler, then you would have noticed that there are three first-class coaches in the 12-car EMU. These coaches are present in the front side, middle and in the rear side of 12-car EMU.

It is now revealed that the southern railway would be doing away with one of the three first-class coaches in the 12-car EMU. Point to be noted is the passengers need not worry as it would not decrease the seats for the first-class passengers but there would be an increase of around 8 to 10%. Early in this 2019, the southern railways began circular services by extending EMU on the Beach-Chengalpet section to Arakkonam.

There were many complaints from the passengers that because of the circular service the position of first-class cum ladies coach in the middle of the train did not correspond to the positions marked at the stations. It is known that the passengers wait on the platform based on the coach location and that was the standard or norm. The above-said issue created many issues for the passengers waiting at the platforms at the stations.

It is now brought out that to resolve this above issue a proposal has been mooted to do away with the middle first-class coach and it would be converted to a ladies coach. There would be an increase in the number of seats in the first-class compartment situated in front and in the rear side of the 12- car EMU and the ladies compartment would have fewer seats.  Information gathered is if the proposal is accepted then 12- car formation would have just 2 first-class coaches, one coach in the front and one coach in the rear side and this would be for regular as well as 3-phase a/c EMUs.
