Ugadi falls today, the New Year for the people of the Deccan region of the country. According to the Lunar calendar, today is the first day of the first month of the calendar (Chaithra) and the day is celebrated by the people of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Sindh and the Hindus of Indonesia.
The festival is called Ugadi or Yugadi (the beginning of an age) in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Cheti Chand for the Sindhis and Thapna for the Rajathani Marwaris. The Indonesian Hindus call this day Nyepi.
In the south of India, the day is celebrated by enjoying an elaborate meal that has six flavours that symbolize the different emotions that one may go through in the coming year:
1. Tang which signifies Surprise (using raw mango)
2. Bitterness which signifies Sorrow (using neem flowers)
3. Sourness which signifies Disgust (using tamarind)
4. Sweetness which signifies Happiness (using jaggery)
5. Saltiness which signifies Fear (using salt)
6. Spicy Hot which signifies Anger (using green chillies)
