For many months, the city of Chennai has been struggling to sustain its water supply. The news that has come out now is on 24th September 2019, Krishna water is likely to be released from the Kandaleru reservoir in Andhra Pradesh to Chennai.
On Tuesday, the AP government is likely to discharge water into Kandaleru-Poondi canal as the storage in the reservoir has been increasing steadily. It must be noted that the reservoir has got storage of 8.61 thousand million cubic feet and it received an inflow of 10,000 cusecs on Friday.
It is now said that the storage would be stepped up and this was as per the officials belonging to Water Resources Department of WRD. Information collected is the water is expected to be discharged for AP needs as well as for Chennai water supply. The city of Chennai has to be provided with 8 tmcft of Krishna water in the spell and this was according to an agreement between TN and AP.
The entry point is located at Uthukottai in Tiruvallur district and it might take few days for the Krishna water to reach this point. It was later pointed out by some officials that by the September month end or by early October Poondi reservoir would receive Krishna water.
It must not be forgotten that the chief minister of AP, Mr. Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, had agreed to release 8 tmcft of Krishna water to Chennai city during a meeting with the delegation from TN in the month of August. Point is currently Chennai city is being supplied with 525 million litres of water a day.
The officials are now hoping that once the inflow of Krishna water stabilizes piper water supply is likely to improve in Chennai and daily volume of water supply would be increased.
