In the wake of the reports that show that the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is the agency with the maximum fatalities record, officials have been taking steps to cut down the rates drastically. In 2009, 4284 accidents were caused by MTC buses, out of which 138 were fatal.
Talking to the press, an MTC official said, ‘Maintenance of our fleet has improved in the last year. A simple thing like checking air in tyres, which was done once a month before, is being done every alternate day. Such steps have not only brought down the number of accidents, but also the number of breakdowns… In the last month, MTC has tried to improve working conditions. Drivers and conductors have been paired and each pair has to drive the same bus on the same route every day for 15 days. This ensures that driver is familiar with the route and the vehicle he drives. Every night, when it is parked in the shed, he gives a list of problems to the technical staff. It is the responsibility of the driver to ensure that all problems are fixed before he leaves the depot again the next morning.’
