Borewells to help Madurai’s water problem

Studies show that ground water in at least 13 unions in Madurai district has depleted drastically. The areas include T. Kallupatti, Sedapatti, Usilampatti and Kallikudi among others. To tackle the issue, the authorities have started a project to sink 1000 deep bore wells.

Speaking to the press, District Collector Anshul Mishra said, ‘Efforts were being taken to sink new borewells since almost all the water sources, including deep borewells in several localities, had dried up. It is against this background that we have initiated steps, on a warfooting, to overcome the water crisis… Instructions have been given to further deepen the bore wells, wherever possible. New borewells would be sunk in 244 places in the city and 761 elsewhere in the district.’
