Generally the growth and the yield of onion in the states of Maharashtra, Andhra, Telangana, Gujarat, and Rajasthan would be quite substantial to meet the demand.

However, the recent heavy rains have severely affected the growth/yield of onion in these states! So, the transport of onions from these states has reduced drastically and thus the market stock of onion has come down considerably. This is has caused a phenomenal increase in the onion price!

The price rise started on a somewhat smaller scale during the month of August and now it has shot up like a rocket and touched a peak! In New Delhi, onion is sold at Rs. 80 per kg.

In order to control the rising onion prices, the central government had initiated action on several fronts. The quantum of onion export was reduced. The central government ordered the state government to take immediate stringent action on hoarders as well. However, the price of onion has not come down. Subsequently, the central government decided to take drastic measures yesterday (Sunday, 29th September).

The Directorate of Export, which functions under the central government department of commerce, released an order yesterday:

‘In order to counter the severe shortage of onions in the country, the export of onion is banned. This is effective right away. This ban will persist until the next order on this issue.

Meanwhile, with the help of the central government-owned cooperative organizations, 50,000 tons of onion have been transported to different parts of the country.

An announcement has been released on behalf of the central government that these onions must be sold at Rs. 23.90 per kg.
