Private bus fares have skyrocketed ahead of this festive season!!

The shocking piece of news that has come out is to travel in an air-conditioned bus from Chennai to Madurai, private bus operator charges Rs 2320 excluding taxes as a base fare on 24th October, 3 days before Deepavali.

The point here is by spending Rs 400 more it is possible to go from Chennai to Madurai in the flight itself. It must be noted that on 24th October flight trip to Madurai from Chennai would cost Rs 2728 (as on Saturday evening) for a single passenger.

It is worthy to note that even if the passengers book their air tickets a month in advance the difference between two travel options has narrowed down a lot. Adequate steps have not been taken by the state government in regulating the private buses and as a result of this the private bus fares have shot up ahead of the festive season.

The state transport minister Mr. M.R. Vijayabhaskar grabbed many eyeballs recently when he came out with a warning against excess bus fare. The truth is nothing has been done on the exorbitant prices. It is said that the only relief for the passengers is the 4600 government special buses that would be available for the Deepavali festival. Only on 23rd October, the special reservation for these buses would start. In amending the rules to cap private bus fares, hesitancy has been shown by the state transport department.

It must not be forgotten that more than 200 new private buses get registered every year. Important information is the inaction on the part of the transport department involves both money as well as it endangers the safety of the passengers. It is shocking to note that the private bus drivers have been forced to work for longer hours without breaks.

It was pointed out by a private bus driver that he quit his job because he was forced to complete 2 trips between Tirunelveli and Chennai continuously during Pongal in January. A private omnibus operator spoke about how due to high diesel and operating costs having 2 drivers would be difficult throughout the year.
