The news that has come out is by the middle of 2020 Chennai metro phase-2 work would start spanning 118.9 km.

There are 3 corridors present in the phase-2 is known. It must be taken into account that corridor 3 is from Madhavaram to SIPCOT, corridor 4 from Light House to Poonamallee, Corridor 5 from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. A part of corridor 3, 52 km stretch between Madhavaram and Taramani would be taken up first. Information gathered is this stretch passes through places like Purasalwalkam, Sterling Road and Mylapore etc.

The point is to start with, construction part of corridor 3 has been selected and this is due to the fact that the whole stretch is underground and would take more time to construct. It is revealed that beyond this point from Taramani till Siruseri the corridor is elevated and would be taken up later for construction.

An official of CMRL spoke about how tunnelling in Chennai city is time consuming process and how this stretch was selected to begin with. He then explained about how Madhavaram is a place where huge depot would be located and how maintenance and cleaning trains would be carried out at this place. Hence the above said decision was taken by CMRL.

In the beginning of the next year, tenders would be called for the civil work and in 3 or 4 months of time preliminary works would begin. Information is the stretch from Madhavaram to CMBT would have as many as 11 elevated stations plus 5 underground stations. Therefore, the work on this stretch would start few months after corridor 3.

It is important to note that one contractor might not get several stations in phase-2. It must not be forgotten that Gammon India and CCCL got many stations in the phase-1 and when their contracts was terminated the work on long stretch came to halt.
