Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission undertakes all recruitments required for the various state government departments and industrial sectors. It has devised a system of categorizing and conducting examinations and after this, the interview, etc., for recruitment.

Recently, TNPSC has carried out a revision in the procedure to qualify for writing the Main Examination in the Group-2 category.

The Secretary of TNPSC, S. Nandhakumar released the notification regarding this on Monday (21st October). The details:

Group-2 - Preliminary examination

There are no changes either in the syllabus or the examination plan.  The sections 8 and 9 under the topics of Tamil Nadu’s history, tradition, culture, the socio-political set-ups and the growth of Tamil Nadu and its administration will be given additional importance to the question asked.

Sufficient time would be given for informing the candidates and their preparation for the examination and a model question paper of the preliminary examination will be relapsed by this month-end.

Group-2 Main Examination

As per the previous change, the main examination consisted of only one question paper. Now, this has been changed to 2 question papers. As per the earlier announcement, the section-A of the Main Examination has been formed into a separate question paper.

This means that the section involving the translation from Tamil to English and English to Tamil will be converted into a separate question paper with a maximum of 100 marks. To qualify after this examination, a minimum of 25 marks is mandatory! Only with a minimum of 25 marks in this 1st paper, the 2nd paper will be corrected.

Change in evaluation for the merit list

The marks obtained in the qualifying examination will not be considered for the ranking. The quality standard had earlier been set giving due consideration to the ability of rural candidates, the ranking focus has shifted to the performance in the 10th Standard rather than the previous graduate course results!

With this, an environment has been created where only candidates with reading/writing knowledge in Tamil can only succeed in this examination. Apart from the translation section, the rest of the syllabus given has been converted for the 2nd question paper

Earlier the total evaluation marks were 200. Now, it will be 300and the examination duration is 3 hours. The marks obtained by the candidate in this examination will be considered for the ranking list.

Those interested in succeeding in both the preliminary and the main examinations will need to be thorough on the topics of Tamil culture, history, etc., from the Sangam age, the details of the vast Tamil literature, various social-cultural formats, and lifestyle, the roles played by the social reformers, etc!

Why the change in Group-2 Examination? TNPSC Explanation

An explanation is given by TNPSC Secretary S. Nandhakumar:

An appeal has been put up for the past several years by the State government secretaries of various departments and the departmental heads that the employees of the state government should have a good language skill and writing skills.

A review was conducted based on this appeal and a decision was taken to conduct written examination for the Group-2 category.

The syllabus was prepared by an expert group comprising of Tamil Professors and experts keeping in mind the requirements of the various government departments.

It may be noted that this change in syllabus and examination system has been welcomed by most people!
