How would you react if you find that the app-based taxis are demanding twice the usual fares for the trip? Shocked, isn’t it!!

In Chennai, since Deepavali, the commuters were being made to pay twice the usual fare amount for their rides. Information collected is the shortage of drivers plus continuous rains and marriages have been responsible for this increase in the taxi fare in Chennai.

On 27th October, Deepavali was celebrated is well known. It has been 3 days since Deepavali and many taxi drivers haven’t returned back to their work in Chennai. The important piece of information is normally more than 100 cabs could be seen parked along the GST near the airport waiting for the bookings from the commuters but on Wednesday morning hardly half the number of cabs was present.

A cab driver who has gone to Madurai to be with his family for Deepavali expressed his thoughts. He spoke about how spending time with the family is important and how the drivers don’t get time for that. He threw light on how the buses from Madurai to Chennai demand Rs 1000 now and how he would reach Chennai in a day or after 2 days.

It was later revealed by Mr. Bhoopathy of Chennai Call Taxi’s Drivers Association that due to heavy rains many drivers did not operate their taxis on Wednesday. The drivers feared water entering into the engines and shelling out Rs 40,000 above for repairing their taxis if they operated on the roads with many potholes. He added that taking the risk for an amount of Rs 100 or Rs 200 would not be worth.

As per official data, Chennai city with a population of more than 90 lakhs has got just 30,000 cabs. A resident belonging to Adambakkam explained about how on Wednesday the shortage of cabs has made the commuters wait for 15 to 20 minutes to get a cab and pay Rs 100 to Rs 150 even for a short trip. It must be noted that the cab drivers did not accept the digital payment and demanded direct payment of money for the trips.
