There is a steady decline in the consumption of milk now. It was reported by some sources belonging to the industry that some brands have seen decrease in the purchase up to 20,000 litres over the last month.

The sensational piece of information is people have stopped buying their regular quota of milk. Milk with more fat content has been preferred by the people because they would be able to dilute the milk and consume the same quantity. Industrial sources also mentioned about cutting down of milk packet size. It was pointed out by a consumer activist Mr. Sadagopan that his household had reduced milk consumption by a litre now due to increase in the price.

He spoke about how in his joint family 3.5 litres of milk was purchased every day and how when the prices of milk went up his family had reduced the milk consumption by a litre. He mentioned that government should have subsidised milk to help the families. Aavin, the government run brand had increase the milk prices is known. It is now revealed that the private players too have increased the rates.

As per an industry insider it is clear that Tamil Nadu used to sell milk at low rates when compared to other southern states. Now, the states of AP and Karnataka have lower selling rates because the state governments have managed to subsidise the hikes.

It is worthy to note that milk consumption also got reduced because of the presence of Aflatoxin M1 that comes from the fungus in the cattle feed. This was brought out by a recent study made by Food Safety and Standard Authority of India or FSSAI. Point is Aflatoxin M1 was present in some processed milk samples. It is said that the milk samples from TN were found to be free from other adulterants like detergent etc.

Steps are being taken to check the presence of Aflatoxin in the feed and milk procured at its collection centres and other dairies. This was according to Mr. C. Kamaraj, MD of Aavin. He added that milk samples are also picked to see whether Aflatoxin is present or not.
