Chennai’s residents are paying through their noses for water as the summer heat scorches the city. Those in apartments and independent house are paying rates that are dictated by private tankers. 12,000 litres of water costs between Rs. 700 and Rs. 1000. In expanded areas, residents look to bore wells and private tankers for their water supply.
Slum dwellers face the heat as they are expected to pay Rs. 5 per bucket of water. The money is taken illegally in spite of efforts taken by the authorities to curb such practices. Dwellers in Thiruvottiyur, Manali, Alandur, West Mambalam and Kanammapet pay up to Rs. 500 a month, where they are required to pay just Rs. 4 per month to Metro Water for 1000 litres.
