It is now revealed that the government would take action on the retailers holding more than 10 tonnes of onions and wholesalers stocking up more than 10 tonnes of onions. In every district in TN, special committees led by civil supplies assistant commissioners have been constituted for checks.
The important piece of information is the onion prices have shot up to Rs 90 per kg now and action would be taken against those traders hoarding onions or selling onions at higher rates. Officials belonging to the TN co-operative societies are going to Nasik in Maharashtra now to make sure that good quality of onions is purchased. By this, controlling the price plus regulating the quality of onions available is possible.
The flash floods in the states of Maharashtra and AP have increased the prices of onions and it has doubled since Deepavali. Onions were sold at a wholesale price of Rs 60 per kg by the vendors at the Koyambedu market and retail price of up to Rs 80. The prices of onions went to Rs 100 per kg at the stores.
A vendor mentioned how from the states like AP, Karnataka, and Maharashtra onions are mostly brought. He added that until Deepavali onions were got from AP and due to excess rains the truck movement got reduced. He explained how the trucks that reach Chennai have poor quality onions and many onions were rotten and unfit to be sold. The prices of the onions were increased to compensate for the loss.
