In the LIC metro station and in the Thousand Lights metro station, the commuter patronage rose up to 26%. This was after the Anna Salai stretch was made 2-way in the month of September. This Anna Salai stretch was made one way about seven years back is known.
In the month of July (when the stretch was one-way) as many as 47,816 commuters traveled from LIC metro station and as many as 71,146 commuters traveled from Thousand Lights metro station. In the month of September, the number of commuters who traveled from LIC metro station was 64, 086 those who traveled from Thousand Lights metro station was 98,126. This was according to data provided by CMRL
After the Anna Salai stretch was made 2-way, the feeder services at these 2 metro stations could have boosted the patronage as these feeder services provided last-mile connectivity to the commuters. This was as per some officials belonging to CMRL.
It is important to note that LIC metro station and Thousand Lights metro station are close to some important places like Spencer’s Plaza, Express Avenue, Sathyam Cinemas, Devi Cineplex, regional Passport office, and LIC office. The data provided by CMRL stated that on the weekend`s patronage touched 1.5 lakhs.
The point is the airport and Washermenpet metro stations are connected by 23.1 km long blue line corridor. It is said that the availability of feeder services at LIC and Thousand Lights metro stations have made the commuters to utilize the metro trains more. It is well known that popular Ethiraj College is just 1.5 km from these stations.
A commuter from Nandanam spoke about how there are plenty of share autos that connects Nungambakkam and Anna Nagar from Ethiraj College. She later mentioned the availability of feeder services throughout the day. The traffic density along the Anna Salai is very high now and the traffic police authorities haven’t yet brought down this traffic density.
According to traffic personnel, it is clear that the flow of traffic has been smoother now in the 2-way stretch when compared to the flow in the one-way period as the Anna Salai is slightly wider now. He added that people must switch to public means of transport for a permanent solution.
At important places like Wellington and Royapettah junctions, there is no traffic signal currently and traffic personnel keep the traffic in control. In the future, a signal would come up in these places.
