On Monday afternoon, public, motorists and others who went along the Sardar Patel Road near IIT Madras were shocked. The reason was a section of Sardar Patel Road near IITM caved in resulting in traffic congestion.
It was later revealed by an official belonging to the MWD that cave in was due to metro water pipe line butpunctured by some workers hired by cell phone operator Vodafone for laying cables in that area. Information collected is water jetting out from the pipeline at high pressure eroded the soil beneath that section of the road.
Barricades were put up to divert the vehicles along one lane and temporary cover was placed over 2ft* 2ft. This has resulted in the slowing down of the vehicular movement. Point to be noted is water mains has been damaged from Sunday and metro water was alerted at once.
It was brought out by an official of Adyar zonal office that work was supposed to start from Sunday night but it started on Monday morning and was completed during the day. Vodafone has agreed to bear the expenses of the repairs and this was according to an official belonging to the MWD.
It must not be forgotten that couple of months back at Venkateswara Nagar in Adyar similar cable laying work damaged the sewer lines of MWD and sewage got mixed with the drinking water. The repairs were done successfully but it took fortnight to complete the repair work. The metro water official mentioned about how the internet service provider was asked to bear the expenses for repairing the damaged sewer lines.
