Perungudi and Kodungaiyur would soon become the most sought after places in Chennai. Guess why?

It is known that while constructing a building and demolition lots of waste is generated and they create huge issues for many. It is now brought out that Chennai Corporation would soon procure imported machinery to process construction and demolition waste C&D generated in the city.

At places like Perungudi and Kodaungaiyur, 2 recycling units would come up and the entire construction waste generated would be sent to these units.

It was later revealed by a senior officer belonging to solid waste management or SWM department that the machines would be able to segregate the components from construction debris and recycled material could be used in construction once again.

The shocking piece of information is Chennai city generates 400 tonnes of construction and demolition wastes every day and these are dumped illegally in the vacant plots or sent to landfills.

It was mentioned by a superintending engineer belonging to the SWM department, Mr. Veerappan that the civic body has collected an amount of Rs 1.71 crores as fine from the offenders since January 2017 till now. This is for the illegal dumping of construction debris.

According to GCC, there are 15 designated locations in Chennai one in each zone for the dumping of construction wastes. The point here is people are not aware of these locations and they pollute vacant plots and water bodies. It must be taken into account that only construction wastes from the demolition of small buildings were dumped illegally whereas the contractors take up the demolition of large buildings and handle the disposal themselves.

Just a week back, the Chennai Corporation had invited bidders to take the processing of construction debris at its designated processing site under design, built, finance, operate and transfer model or DBFOT model is known.

It must be noted that the construction wastes from zones 1 to 8 would be collected and sent to Kodungaiyur facility and wastes from zones 9 to 15 would be sent to the Perungudi facility. Information is the combined capacity of these 2 units would be 1200 tonnes.
