Getting sewer connections in Chennai city involves lots of hassles for the residents and it takes time. In this scenario, this piece of news would provide a huge relief for the Chennai residents.
The news that has emerged out is Chennai metro water department is considering over service to provide sewer connections by means of a phone call. The bill for the sewage connection would be raised later. This process would reduce the issues faced by the people in getting sewer connections.
It is brought out that the MWD is expecting to lessen the pollution caused due to sewage overflow on the roads or the release of raw sewage into Chennai city’s waterways. Shifting from procedure centric to citizen-centric approach would be there and this was according to the sources.
To get a sewage connection, residents must contact the helpline number-4567 4567.
The point to be noted here is the residents would be required to pay for their sewage connections only after getting the connections in a few days. The information collected is there are options to pay the charges in installments once the bill is generated.
It was later mentioned by Mr. Rajagopal, resident belonging to the officer’s Colony in Mogappair, Chennai that this service when introduced would be of huge benefit for the residents of Chennai as they struggle for months to get sewer connections.
He then brought to light about how the residents have to visit at least 3 offices including Corporation office to get to apply and get a connection. He concluded that it takes a minimum of one month plus a lot of follow up with the officials to get the sewage connection. Point is much time gets lost in the current process.
Just similar to road cut charges, MWD might include installation or other charges in the bill and make sure that the residents are spared of additional charges. This was revealed by some residents belonging to Ambattur. It is important to note that every year at least 10,000 sewer connections are getting added in the network.
Presently, MWD is serving nearly 8 lakhs customers and soon 2 lakhs customers would be added once the schemes get over.
