Generally, onion to Tamil Nadu is transported from other states such as Maharashtra, Andhra, and Karnataka. Daily truckloads of onion are delivered at the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market.
Out of this 80% of the onion is delivered from the state of Maharashtra and the balance 20% from Andhra and Karnataka. However, there has been unprecedented torrential rains this year in Maharashtra state and it rained heavily in the states of Andhra and Karnataka as well! Naturally, this heavy downpour has severely affected the growth/yield of onions in all the above 3 states! Thus, the quantity of onions transported from these 3 states has reduced substantially.
Due to this unexpected development, the price of onion has shown an increasing trend.
Onion is being sold in the retail shops at Rs. 95 to Rs. 135 per kg.
The Consultant of the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable Traders’ Association Soundararajan shared in this regard:
There has been an unprecedented heavy downpour in the 3 states of Maharashtra, Andhra, and Karnataka this year. In earlier times, if the quantity transported in one state is affected, the other 2 states will make up for the same. However, during this year, heavy rain has affected all the states! This has severely adversely affected the growth/yield of onions. Because of this, only 40 to 50 truckloads of onion is transported to Koyanmbedu every day. So, the price of onion has shot up.
Ballari onion was being sold at Rs. 20 to Rs. 30 per kg last month. Now, this has shot up to Rs. 50 to Rs, 60 per kg. The small onion or ‘sambar’ onion was sold at Rs. 30 to Rs. 40 per kg. Now, it is being sold at Rs. 50 to Rs. 60 per kg. These prices for wholesale selling only. So, the retail price will be further up.
As the onion price has shot up, people are reluctant to buy them! This high onion price is likely to prevail up to the end of this year! Only after a larger quantity of onion starts arriving after Pongal next year, there are prospects for onion price to come down!
