The latest news is southern railway is working at a great pace to ready Adambakkam station. It is now revealed by a source that in January or in February 2020 MRTS services from Velachery up to Adambakkam would begin.

It must be noted that Adambakkam station is part of 2.5 km Velachery- St Thomas Mount extended MRTS section and is pending completion due to land acquisition issues in the last 500 m between Adambakkam and St Thomas Mount.

Important point to be noted here is it has been decided by the southern railways that instead of waiting indefinitely for the land acquisition process to get done to start MRTS services to St Thomas Mount, it would begin running trains to those stations that were completed. The decision was taken some 5 months back itself. It is important to note that railway tracks have been already laid from Velachery to Puzhuthivakkam and Adambakkam.

As per a senior official belonging to the construction wing of the southern railway, it is clear that buildings are nearing completion and laying of OHE or overhead electric lines (that supplies power for operating EMU rakes) and building of platforms are pending.  He added that the traffic diversion at the Adambakkam station due to the ongoing work also needed to be sorted out.

The information is one service would run from Velachery to Adambakkam on a single line and turn back on the same line towards Velachery. The official revealed how when the work up to Velachery was not completed MRTS services were operated from Beach to Tambaram on a single line.
