Steep onion price still prevails!

60 truckloads of onions arrive daily at the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market from other states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra. However, due to heavy downpour in all the 3 states this season, the growth/yield of onion has come down drastically. So, only a lesser quantity of onion is being transported presently from these states. In place of  60 truckloads, only 30 truckloads of onion arrive nowadays.

With the above development, the price of onion has shot up in a gradual trend and now has touched sky-high prices!

Onion, which was sold at Rs. 70 to Rs. 80 per kg just a few days ago, is now being sold at prices of Rs. 90 to Rs. 100 even at the wholesale vegetable market in Chennai Koyambedu!

Low-quality onions from Andhra are being sold at Rs. 60 to Rs. 70. The small onion (sambar onion) is sold at Rs. 80 t0 to Rs. 100 per kg.

With onion price crossing the Rs. 100 per kg mark at the wholesale vegetable market itself, the public is acutely anxious that the retail prices in supermarkets and street shops may shoot up like mad!

The public has demanded that the government must now take some initiative to control this,

Further, drumstick is being sold at Rs. 250 per kg! In this scenario, the traders inform with extreme anguish that the onion price will go up further!!
