There are as many as 669 parks within the Chennai city limits and out of those as many as 554 parks would be maintained by private parties.

The shortage of manpower has made GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation to take this decision of handling over 554 parks within the city limits to the private parties. At a total contract value of Rs 40 crores, a total of 61 contractors have been chosen now. It must be noted that out of the remaining parks the civic body is maintaining 51 parks and 61 parks have been adopted by local welfare associations, NGOs etc and three parks have been closed as of now.

For maintaining the parks, strict norms have been fixed and this was according to the officials. It is important to mention here that the maintenance staffs must wear uniforms and badge of the company and the watchmen must be between 18 and 50. Important information is the contractors must strictly follow wage laws and in case of any exploitation complaint strict action would be taken.

By the end of January 2020, the GCC had ordered the contractors to set up three RWH structures in small parks and 10 RWH structures in big parks. It was later brought out by some officials that zonal officers would supervise the progress and if there is no improvement then their contract would be terminated after few warnings.

The working time would be from 5 am to 1 pm in the first shift and from 1 pm to 9 pm in the second shift. Important point is mowing and trimming would be done once in 30 days in the summer time and once in 15 days in the winter season. Information collected is when compared to the green cover in Chennai city in the year 2011 the green cover was 14.9 % in 2018.
