If you have though that only the private school students of TN can speak fluent English, then this piece of news would surely surprise you.

It is worthy to mention that fluency in English would not be a skill restricted just to the children studying in private schools. The sensational news is as a part of the curriculum in the government schools in TN, ‘Spoken English’ module would be rolled out soon by the state government. This would benefit many students.

On Wednesday, 27th November 2019, the school education minister Mr. K.A. Sengottaiyan would release a guide for the programme.

According to a senior official, the government school students miss out on the opportunities as their communication skills are not on par with those students of private schools. Inability of the government school students to communicate in fluent English has been a drawback inspite of their superb subject knowledge. The students lag behind in the colleges due to this problem.

The point is this initiative would break the stereotype that the students belonging to the government schools cannot communicate in English. Parents and students have appreciated this move by the TN government. It was later revealed by Mr. Arumainathan belonging to TN Students- Parents Welfare Association, that the training must be conducted by the specialised instructors and not by the existing teachers.

On Tuesday, an order was issued by the school education department and it stated that the students would get weekly training on soft skills including communication from their respective English teachers. It was mentioned by an official belonging to SCERT that three teachers from each district, who are key resource persons, would get spoken English training and these teachers would in turn train all the English teachers.

The students of classes 1 to 9 would receive spoken English training and for this a new time table would be formulated integrating this module. There would be weekly training for the students of classes 1 to 5 for 90 minutes and it would include activity based training of spoken English for 40 minutes.

It must be noted that these students of classes 1 to 5 would be watching Kalvi TV channel for 40 minutes and would do activities based on the content watched on Kalvi TN for 10 minutes. The order also stated that the students belonging to 6 to 9 would get spoken English training for 45 minutes in a week.
