The construction of 15.3 km new metro line, that would link Kilambakkam with the airport in Chennai with 15 stations in between, would begin in the year 2021 and a mammoth amount of Rs 3500 crores would be spent for this. It is now said that this new metro line would soar over 5 flyovers and grade separators on the busy GST Road and run parallel to the suburban line.
It must be noted that this line would be an important link to the mofussil bus terminals at Kilambakkam (under construction) and Madhavaram (Operational) through the airport. Many far-flung suburban localities in Chennai that have poor access to the public transport would be highly benefited by this new line.
Tenders would be floated and DPR or detailed project report would be prepared. It is brought out that many stations and their locations might change when DPR is prepared. The exact number of stations and the locations of stations, design of the stations and corridors etc would be present in the DPR. This was as per an official belonging to CMRL. He later spoke about how when the metro line comes up the journey would be a roller-coaster ride for the commuters from Vandalur, Perungalathur and Tambaram to Central or Anna Nagar. The point here is the metro train would reach a height of 21 m above the Kathipara junction and enter a tunnel at a minimum depth of 18m underground.
The official later mentioned that the elevated line might be at an altitude of 14 m to 15 m as there are many flyovers along the route. It must be noted that in the corridor near Vadapalani the metro line runs above the flyover. Point to be noted is the elevated line might look similar to this metro line near Vadapalani. Detailed project report or DPR might get ready by one year and the construction of the line might begin afterwards.
By the time a portion of phase-2 linking Madhavaram to Sholinganallur and Madhavaram to CMBT is completed by 2025, this line is likely to be ready. It is worthy to note that CMRL has planned to link places like RMK Nagar and Irumbuliyur that are far away from the suburban stations and these places would get a metro station each. By means of a single train, the commuters would be able to travel from Kilambakkam to Central, Anna Salai or Anna Nagar via airport, Alandur and CMBT.
