The city of Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts have been receiving rains. This has now increased the water levels in the 4 reservoirs.
The storage level in Chembarambakkam has been increased by 100 mcft in a single day. It must be noted that on Saturday the water level stood at 640 mcft and on Sunday it touched 749 mcft.
It has been brought to light by some officials belonging to the metro water department that around 90 mm of rains was received in Chembarambakkam area and it was followed by78 mm rains in Poondi. Cholavaram received 76 mm and Red Hills received 47 mm that was the lowest of the catchment areas.
The important information is inspite of getting 90 mm rains, Chembarambakkam reservoir is barely 20 percent full. It is known that the capacity of this reservoir is 3645 mcft. It was later revealed by an official belonging to Tiruvallur district that the catchment areas of this reservoir were in Tiruvallur district. The inflow of water would increase to this reservoir when heavy rain lashes these areas.
The total capacity of Poondi reservoir is 3231 mcft and the 78mm rains took the storage level of the reservoir to 979 mcft now. Point is half of the Red Hills is now full and is touching 1600mcft against the full capacity of3300 mcft and this was on Sunday. The water levels in the reservoirs could increase as more rains are expected in the next 48 hours.
According to a metro water department official, the water supply of Chennai residents would be increase as the storage levels have been rising steadily now. By means of pipes, 650 mld of water is being distributed presently is known. He then explained about how with more rains MWD would increase the water supply to more areas and for a longer time.
Important piece of information is MWD has been supplying 650.70 million litres of water per day or MLD to the Chennai city people. Point is major sources for this daily supply of water includes Veeranam Lake present in Cuddalore, desalination plants located at places like Nemmeli and Minjur plus water from Red Hills.
