Yes! With the price of small onion touching the unprecedented peak of Rs. 200 per kg in the Chennai wholesale vegetable market at Koyambedu, both buyers and sellers - the traders and the public have been reeling under this terrible shock!

Of course, onion prices have shown an increasing trend throughout the country over the past few weeks.

The opposition parties have been conducting protests in the parliament on this issue!

In this scenario, the large onions are being sold at Rs. 100 to Rs. 130 per kg and the small onions, at Rs. 140 to Rs. 180 per kg in the Chennai Metro City wholesale vegetable market at Koyambedu.

The traders explained that as the quantity of onions transported from other states to Tamil Nadu has substantially reduced, the onion prices have shot up. As the onion stock in the northern states was down, the transported quantity was also less adding to the onion price rise.

Usually, around 100 truckload of onion (around 20 tons) arrive daily at the Chennai Koyambedu market. However, at present, only 35 truckloads of onion arrive at Chennai.

It is noteworthy that on the same date last year, the onion was sold at Rs. 45 per kg and the small onions, at Rs. 160 per kg!

Presently, onion is sold at Rs. 150 per kg in Kolkata! In Nasik, Maharashtra, a quintal of onion is sold at Rs. 11000.
