As there was no stock available, drumstick was sold at Dindigul at a price of Rs. 800 per kg!
Drumstick is harvested in the areas covering 2000 hectares in Dindigul, Natham, Vedasandhur, Reddiyarchathiram, Ottanchathiram, and Palani.
It is transported for sales in Madurai, Salem, Coimbatore, Kerala, and Andhra. During the drumstick season, 12 tons of drumsticks arrive daily at the Dindigul market. However, this has reduced for the last 2 months. As there are no stocks of drumstick available, traders are constrained to buy it from other states and sell! As such, it was sold at Rs. 250 to Rs. 300 per kg last week.
Presently, even the quantity of drumstick arriving from other states has also reduced. So, on the morning of 4th December, it was sold at Rs. 600 per kg and by the evening, this shot up to Rs. 800 per kg!
A trader shared regarding this issue:
‘As the arrival of stock has dwindled, there is a heavy demand! There may be 10 to 12 drumsticks in 1 kg. As there are auspicious days (good for organising weddings, and other functions), the people are ready to buy at astronomical prices up to Rs. 1000 per kg! There are prospects that even a single drumstick may be sold at Rs. 100! The price of drumstick has now overshot the onion prices which is the hot topic in the market!’
Whenever the harvest is lesser, vegetables including tomato are transported from Dindigul, Ottanchathiram, Hosur, and Karnataka, and Andhra and sold.
As the quantity of tomato arriving in this market has reduced, 15 kg of tomatoes were sold at Rs. 280 to Rs. 400!
Brinjal sold at Rs. 60 pas kg. During the season period, though sufficient stocks arrive, the drumstick is sold at Rs. 10 to Rs. 15 per kg.
This situation has forced the agriculturists in Pollachi and surrounding areas to give up the harvesting of the drumstick. As such, with a huge reduction in stock arriving, the price of drumstick shot up and sold at Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 per kg.
Over the last week, the drumstick price went up to Rs. 500 per kg. This development has rendered both the trader and public shocked and awe-struck!
A wholesale trader shared on this:
‘With the incessant monsoon seasonal rains, the stock of arrival of several vegetables including tomato has come down considerably. As water stagnated in the farming lands, the plants rotted. As such, the price of drumstick has also shot up to unprecedented and unheard-of levels!
Due to the incessant rains at Ottanchathiram and Moovanur areas, all the drumstick flowers in the harvest areas withered away thereby reducing the chances of conversion to the drumstick.
Due to severe shortage, as per the Pollachi order, the drumstick is being brought from Ottanchathiram and sold. The present rate is Rs. 500 per kg! This is a record high in the history of Pollachi market! The retail traders and other external markets sell at Rs. 600 per kg!’
