Second hand phone numbers give users grief

According to the Telephone Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), if a phone number is not used for 90 days, the number is disconnected and reallocated. This seems to be giving problems to new users of these numbers.

Says Loganathan who had a second hand number, ‘The caller used to ask me where I was studying and threatened to come and beat me up. He must have been really angry with whoever he was asking for.’

Vijayalakshmi Vijayan, spokesperson for BSNL says, ‘The numbers could be reallocated more than twice. In BSNL, 180 days is the first grace period a user gets. During this, the balance remains but outgoing calls are not allowed. There is a second grace period where the balance also dissolves. If the user doesn`t recharge the phone during the grace period, the number goes to choose your number list.’
