There is huge excitement now amongst the students, teachers, science enthusiasts, researchers etc in southern parts of India. The reason for that is solar eclipse would be visible tomorrow on 26th December 2019 after a long gap of 75 years and these above mentioned people would be viewing this solar eclipse from various locations. Incredible isn’t it!!
This is a very rare event and to make the people view the event (subject to clear skies) telescope arrangements would be made at the BM Birla Planetarium, Periyar Science and Technology Centre, Chennai on the 26th December. This was according to Mr. Soundararaja perumal, executive director, TN Science and Technology Centre.
It is important to mention that the path of eclipse would begin in Saudi Arabia and move east through southern India, northern Sri Lanka, parts of Indian Ocean and Indonesia before ending in Pacific Ocean. The executive director then revealed that a partial solar eclipse would be visible throughout most of Asia and northern Australia.
People living in TN in places like Ooty, Coimbatore, Tirruppur, Erode, Karur, Dindigul, Trichy, Sivagangai, Pudukottai and its adjoining places would be able to view the annular phase.
Over 93% of suns disc would be covered by moon in these places in TN and just partial phase of solar eclipse would be visible in the Chennai city. In India, annular eclipse was last seen on 15th January 2010 and the next annular eclipse would occur on 21st June in 2020.
People in places like Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttarakhand would be able to view this annular eclipse next year. It must be noted that on 21st May in the year 2031the next annular eclipse would be visible in Tamil Nadu.
It was later brought out by Dr. Uma Ramachandran, belonging to the Breakthrough Society, TN Chapter, that various workshops have been organised to educate the people in India regarding the eclipse. She spoke about how eclipse watch would be organised at several places in TN and in Kerala.
