Lalgudi Jayaraman no more

Noted violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman passed away in Chennai on Monday. He was 82. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. He is reported to have been in ill health since a stroke he had some time ago. Mr. Jayaraman’s children are both violinists.

He has taken after his father V.R. Gopala Iyer who played the violin, flute and veena. He began his career at the tender age of 12 as an accompanying artist. Soon, he became a solo artist. He has also composed songs in Kannada, Sanskrit, Telugu and Tamil.

Mr. Jayaraman received the Padma Shri in 1972 and the Padma Bhushan in 2001. He is a State Vidhwan of Tamil Nadu and a fellow at the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
