Overgrown trees in Chennai has been creating issues is known. There are many trees along the bus routes and along the streets in Chennai. These trees would be pruned by the corporation of Chennai.
Important information collected is as many as 1.61 lakhs trees present along 471 bus routes and in 33,000 streets in Chennai city would be trimmed by the Chennai Corporation.
To report civic issues caused by the overgrown trees in Chennai, the corporation commissioner Mr G. Prakash, has asked the residents to dial 1913.
The thick foliage of these 1.61 lakh trees obstructing the street lights has become a common issue and there are some trees whose branches have been obstructing the traffic flow along the roads. The lives of the pedestrians are at risk and this has been due to some branches. This was later revealed by an official belonging to the corporation.
Over the past few months, the residents present in many neighbourhoods have been requesting the Chennai Corporation to trim or cut short the branches. In many localities in Chennai, the civic body has not been able to take up pruning works. It is now said that after the requests from the residents, a total of 358 workers from the parks department and 11 overseers have been involved in pruning the tree branches.
For the pruning works, as many as 6 hydraulic equipments has been purchased by the corporation and each equipment cost Rs 20 lakhs.
As there were many formalities involved in the pruning of the trees, the junior engineers and zonal officers were reluctant to co-ordinate with the Parks Department. The street lighting along many stretches has been affected due to the delay in the pruning of the trees and the park overseers were unable to help the residents.
Mr Sukumar Babu, former Chennai Corporation Council floor leader, threw light on the shortage of the equipment for pruning trees. He highlighted the need for more such equipment. He mentioned the need to prune many trees in Arumbakkam. Finally, he expressed his unhappiness about a dangerous tree present in Ayyavoo Colony in Jayammal Street and how it has not been removed yet in spite of the resident requests.
