As one of the very rare occurrences in the History of the Sabarimalai Temple of Lord Sri Ayyappan, the temple corridors will remain open on the night of 14th January.
The corridors, in fact, will be closed only by 2.30 AM the next day early morning after the early Makarasankaram Poojai is performed on the deity of Lord Sri Ayyappan.
The Makara Sankarama Pooja is one of the most important poojas performed in the temple of Sabarimalai Lord Sri Ayyappan.
This is performed during the Muhurtham (period) when the Sun crosses over from the ‘Dhanusu’ Rasi to ‘Makara Rasi’.
The special coconut (filled with ghee) brought from Thiruvananthapuram Kavadiyar Palace will be broken and then Abhishekham will be performed.
Makara Jothi and Makara Nakshatram will be visible on this day only. The sacred jewellery brought from Pandalam will be adorned on Lord Sri Ayyappan and then Deeparadhanai will be performed.
This year, Sun is crossing to Makara Rasi at 2.09 AM early morning on 15th January. So, the temple corridors which were opened on 5.00 PM on 14th January will not be closed at 11.00 PM but will remain open.
The devotees will be allowed to have Darshan of Lord Sri Ayyappan.
The preparations for the sacred Makara Sankaram Pooja will commence at 1.45 AM early morning. This sacred Pooja will be performed at 2.09 AM. After this, the hymn (devotional song) ‘Harivarasanam’ will be sung/chanted at 2.30 PM and then only the temple corridors will be closed.
The temple corridors will be open on 15th morning only by 4.00 AM instead of the usual 3.00 AM. The temple corridors will be closed at 1.00 PM and then opened by 5.00 PM.
The sacred jewellery will reach by 1.00 PM and then Deeparadhanai will be performed. Only after these 2 events, the devotees will be allowed to climb the steps for Darshan of Lord Sri Ayyappan.
The devotees observed that it is a very very rare occurrence indeed when the temple corridors opened on one morning will remain open till the next day morning!
