In the last few months in 2019, the organ donations have picked up speed in few government hospitals in Chennai. Important information collected is tissue donations especially skin, cornea, bones etc after cardiac deaths were improving slowly in these hospitals. There were 13 donors in the first half of 2019 in 4 government hospitals.
The government hospitals had a total of 22 donors and 77 organs by the end of 2019. In 2018, the government hospitals had 27 donors and 74 organs.
The health department officials later brought out that the fag end of 2019 broke the lull in organ donations and transplants in the government hospitals. To take steps to improve the deceased donor programme and conduct more organ transplants for the sake of poor patients, the health department held a meeting with the deans of all government medical college hospitals.
Till the month of July in 2019, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital or RGGGH in Chennai had just 5 organ donations. At the end of 2019, this hospital saw a total of 10 organ donations and in the last 3 months, 5 organ donations took place. There were as many as 9 organ donations in government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai.
Tissue donations (after cardiac arrests) increased at the government hospitals like KMC Hospital etc and it is revealed that in tissue donations after cardiac arrests 257 donors donated 514 corneas and 56 donors donated skin from January to December 2019. This was according to the officials of Transplant Authority of TN.
Tissue donations especially skin has been on the rise at Chennai KMC hospital and this was as per the dean P. Vasanthamani. From just 20 donations in 2018, KMC registered 29 donations in 2019. Out of those as many as 9 tissue donations were in November and December 2019.
