The state of Tamil Nadu has added one more feather to its cap now.
The award titled ‘Best Performance in Road Safety` was given to TN by the centre. On Monday, 13th January 2019, Defence Minister, Mr Rajnath Singh, gave this award to TN Transport Minister Mr M.R. Vijayabaskar.
As per official data, in the year 2018, TN witnessed a 32% drop in the deaths due to road accidents when compared to the previous year. In the years 2016 and 2017, the state of TN grabbed many eyeballs as it topped India’s statewide accident chart.
The reduction in the deaths due to road accidents has been due to the coordinated efforts by several departments and regular reviews by State Road Safety Council headed by Nithin Gadkari, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister (MoRTH).
It is now revealed that the police department played a huge role in the reduction of deaths due to road accidents by strict enforcement in terms of helmets, seat belts, monitoring patrol vehicles. The accidental deaths were brought down by strengthening emergency care by establishing more trauma care centres, ambulances and responder bikes.
It was later pointed out by a MoRTH official that health team has been sensational in their efforts and introduction of emergency mobile app capturing GPS and GIS for reaching the accident spot faster have also helped in reducing the response time.
The transport minister of TN later spoke about how it was not possible to reduce the road accidents overnight and how efforts would continue to reduce fatalities in 2019-20. On the national highways, one-third of road accidents get reported.
An official belonging to NHAI shed light on how the identification and elimination of black spots, installation of speed breakers plus signage at accident-prone stretches have reduced the fatalities in the last 3 years.
