On Monday, 20th January, private milk marketing firms have increased the selling price of all types of milk sold in the state of TN. Depending on the fat content, the increased prices range from Rs 50 per litre to Rs 60 per litre. It must be taken into account that the TN state-owned Aavin has a price of Rs 40 per litre to Rs 51 per litre.

The private milk players have more than 55 percent of the market share in Chennai and in TN and the high price would affect the majority of milk consumers. There are many milk-based products such as paneer, butter, curd, ice cream, ghee etc and it is now said that the prices of these products would also be increased by a minimum of Rs 5 per litre. Major players like Arokya, Dodla and Tirumala and other small milk marketing firms have brought the changes.

As per Mr R.G. Chandramohan, managing director of Hatsun Agro Product Ltd, in the last 4 years, the milk supply has been affected due to many reasons and the procurement rate has gone up. He added that heavy rains in this year affected the milk procurement and supply in many parts of TN. It is now brought out that this company whose flagship brand is Arogya and which also owns Arun ice creams has begun marketing its products in other southern states.

Many farmers are finding it difficult to maintain their cows as the cost has increased. These farmers have been pushing for an increase in the procurement price.

The milk processing units of firms owning Dodla, Heritage and Tirumala brands are located in Andhra Pradesh. They supply large amounts of milk and milk products in Chennai and other nearby districts in TN.
