Chennai Metro Rail Limited or CMRL recently opened its parking facility at Chennai Central is known.

It is now said that the parking rates for bikes and cars at Chennai Central railway station would be increased.  This was according to some sources belonging to the southern railways.

For bikes, Rs 10 per hour and for cars Rs 25 per hour is charged by CMRL and that is atleast twice the amount charged by the southern railways for parking at the station. At the Central station, the normal parking rates for cars is Rs 25 for the first 2 hours and Rs 35 for the next two hours and Rs 70 for the subsequent 2 hours. For bike parking at the Central station, a person has to pay Rs 5 for first 4 hours and Rs 10 up to 8 hours.

It is worthy to mention that parking space, at premier car parking facility available opposite to More Market Complex suburban station, costs Rs 50 per hour. After CMRL opened its parking facility last week, the senior officials belonging to the railways took up the issue of increasing the parking space rate. Those who park their vehicles for a long time like a week or more might have to pay more. Till now, nothing has been finalized and this was as per some sources.

The covered parking space for the vehicles offered by CMRL is different from the open parking space or covered space with a flimsy thin roof offered by the railways. This is now being discussed by many officials. A senior official of railways threw light on how those who could pay high rates for parking their vehicles would prefer the metro parking space than the railways parking space. It is revealed that there would be a reduction in the revenue for the railways.
