According to an analysis conducted by Child Rights and You or CRY of the 2018 NCRB or National Crime Records Bureau data, nearly half of crimes against children in TN are sexual offences. Point is the number of sexual offences has gone up in 2017-18.  It is shocking to mention that the crimes against children have gone up by 250 percent in TN and that is in the last 5 years of time.

Under the Posco Act or Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 49 percent of crimes were recorded in TN. Information collected is 18 percent rise in the number of sexual offences is almost twice the national average of 9.9 percent.

An advocate and child rights activist, Mr. Christuraj Savarinayagam was of the view that better reporting of sexual offences against children has increased the number of cases now. He expressed his unhappiness regarding this increase.

It must be taken into account that the perpetrators have become smarter and have found new ways to abuse children He wanted TN to put in place strong child protection systems in every village, town and city to prevent those crimes from taking place. In the last 1 year, as many as 4155 crimes were reported against children in TN and this accounted for 3 percent of crimes against children reported in the entire India.

Mr. Karthik Narayan, regional director CRY south, spoke about how it was worrying to witness TN recording many crimes against under the Posco act. He threw light on various factors like education, awareness and community vigilance and said these would prevent crimes against girls. He concluded that more money flowing to child protection would be important and by this the trend would be arrested.

To curb abuse in the state of TN, social welfare department had announced few months back that it would maintain its own registry of child sexual offenders with the home department. The address and bio-metric information of the offenders would be available in the registry and it would be of huge help for the police department to keep an eye on the offenders.
