By the end of this 2020, work to re- construct the arrival building would start after the integrated terminal coming up between the passenger terminals is constructed.
Portions of the international arrival building have been vacated by AAI now so that it could be demolished in phases.
To free up space that has been cordoned off for pulling down, the baggage conveyors have been made close to one another. This was confirmed by an official belonging to AAI. He then spoke about the presence of 6 conveyors at the terminal and how more areas would be freed up in the future.
It is important to note that a remote bus lounge in the terminal used by the airline passengers to alight from the shuttle buses would be taken up for work. He explained about how the idea was to provide much space for the construction. New terminal would be coming up and the existing arrival hall would be pulled down and rebuilt and would be merged with this new terminal. By this arrangement, more international passengers could be handled easily in another 2 to 3 years. This was revealed by an official. Point is those areas that were cordoned off would be prepared for the demolition work.
As per the plans, it is clear that the integrated terminal would be completed by AAI. Later, the international arrivals would be moved from the existing building to the new structure. In the next step, pulling down and rebuilding existing arrival terminal would be done as a part of phase-2 expansion to increase passenger capacity to 30 million per year.
In the last few years, the international passenger movement has been on the rise and AAI has not been able to commission the ground floor arrival hall of international terminal due to lack of personnel and adequate baggage handling facility.
