From the year 2017 onwards, Anna University or AU had introduced a programming language called ‘Python’ for the engineering students in TN. This python programming language is used in emerging areas such as AI or artificial intelligence, machine learning and internet of Things or IoT etc are well known. In this year, many engineering colleges belonging to AU had recorded poor results.
On Tuesday, AU results were declared and it was found that more than 50 percent of the first-year engineering students were unable to clear python programming language paper in the first semester examinations. A total of 64,810 students appeared for the engineering first semester examinations and just 31,044 cleared python programming language paper (pass percentage of 48%).
Some private engineering college principals pointed out that question paper standard of Python language was high. They explained about how only a few engineering colleges recorded more than 75 percent pass. Professors were of the opinion that the faculty members from these colleges did not have the knowledge to teach Python language.
The question paper was difficult and the first-year students might not have exposure to programming and faculty in many engineering colleges in TN lack training in Python. This was according to Mr Maran, director of Sairam Group of Institutions.
Mohammad Sathak Group of Institutions CEO, Professor K. Manivannan appreciated the move to introduce Python. He spoke about how Python programming language was an easy one but the question paper for the first semester was tough. Hence, many colleges recorded poor results.
He was of the view that the question paper for the first year must be set on basics only and in the second and third year the difficulty level could be more. As per the vice-chancellor of AU, Mr Surappa, coding experts from the software field must be brought to train the faculty in Python and coding skills.
