For the sake of building the second airport, many places have been sourced around Chennai city and this has been going on for many years.

The latest news is the government is set to float global bids in a week for a consultant to do a detailed master plan for the site that is likely to be Parandur near Sunguvachatram near Chennai.

It was brought out by some sources that the consultant selected would prepare a financial model and recommend development model under PPP or Public-Private Partnership. For the sake of future development, the proposed airport would need about 4500 acres of land.

Just a few days back, a meeting took place between senior bureaucrats and chief minister of TN, Mr E. Palaniswami and this meeting was for the purpose of speeding up the process of finalizing the plan.

Request for Proposal to zero in a consultant would be carried out by TIDCO or Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited. Techno-economic feasibility study would be conducted by the selected firm. Project report would be prepared. Later, the government would be assisted in getting statutory clearances and bid process would be conducted.

The location of the site and identification of the consultant would be made known by the government by March and April. It must not be forgotten that TIDCO in July 2019 dumped its previous bid after extending the tender call three times. Point is there were a series of issues such as prospective consultants demanding the government to identify the site first. To get the project going, the agency had convened a pre-bid meeting is known.
