Now, the corporation of Chennai has drawn up a comprehensive programme for the processing and disposing of solid waste generated every day by scientific method. For the cement industries to dispose wet and dry waste, the solid waste department of the civic body has come up with many initiatives. These initiatives are micro-composting, generating bio-gas, installing incinerators and using plastic waste as fuel. Point is various projects for the disposal of solid waste has already started and they are in different stages of implementation.

The plans set into motion to dispose solid waste were mentioned by a senior official. He explained how steps have been taken to make Chennai a zero percent garbage city.

It was later revealed that as a part of zero percent garbage city Pallikaranai as well as Kodungaiyur dump yards located on the water bodies would be closed. By June next year, the legacy waste would be cleared.

Alandur dump yard was shut several years back and the civic body has already given work order to a private agency for clearing the garbage pile here. Information is bio-mining at the dump yard located on Tambaram- Velachery Main Road is going on now. Segregation of plastic waste and bio-manure has been possible now at the Alandur dump yard by this bio-mining process.

In places like Anna Nagar, Madhavaram, Pallikaranai marshland and Sholinganallur, the civic body had issued work orders for bio-compressed natural gas plants.
