Tambaram is an important place in Chennai and many MTC, as well as long distances buses, get parked along the GST Road in west Tambaram causing heavy traffic congestion.

A draft Comprehensive Mobility Plan or CMP has been proposed banning the parking of MTC buses and long-distance buses for the sake of decongesting west Tambaram.

It must be noted that MTC buses get parked or terminated all along the GST Road from the market area till Tambaram Sanatorium bus stand. In order to avoid chaos in the already congested area, there is a need to shift the terminal to the existing bus stand. It was mentioned by a report that the existing on-street terminal shall be used just as pick-up/drop-off bays.

On this important GST Road, a total of over 1.5 lakh vehicles have been registered and this was according to the report. Traffic surveys have been used for this purpose and it was found that GST Road has got a mix of heterogeneous traffic. For the pedestrians, on-street parking has been an issue as vehicles encroach pedestrian’s usage area forcing them to walk on the carriageway.

For reducing on-street parking issues, and the organised parking lot has been planned at west Tambaram by the city corporation. It was revealed by the report that no parking lots were available in or near the market area. Important information is the existing facilities of the footpath on GST Road are either too small not adhering to the standards or totally encroached by on-street vendors. In and around the market area, there is little or no pedestrian footpath observed.
