In the future, we could come across long interior and arterial roads in places like Anna Nagar, Nungambakkam, Tondiarpet, Mylapore, Adyar and Velachery etc with continuous footpaths, carriageways, on-street parking etc. The Mega Streets Project launched by the GCC would be turning these arterial roads in Chennai into pedestrian-friendly roads.
On Tuesday, 11th February 2019, Mr S.P. Velumani, municipal administration minister, inaugurated the above said project and unveiled the Adoption of Chennai Street Design and Implementation Guidelines. He mentioned that the proposed area for the project was 426 sq km. This included 400 km of GCC streets and 286 km of roads belonging to other departments.
It is important to mention here that the first phase of the project would focus on 70 sq km area and 110 km long arterial and interior roads in places like Anna Nagar, Nungambakkam, Adyar etc would be transformed.
There are few roads that would be re-designed and these are R.K. Salai, Gandhi Mandapam Road, Sardar Patel Road, Anna Nagar 3rd Avenue, New Avadi Road, Cathedral Road, Tiruvottriyur High Road, Royapettah High Road, Kutchery Road and Greenways Road etc.
The re-designed pathways in streets would have many facilities like children’s park, bench for the elders, RWH systems plus drinking water taps. Women, children, cyclists and elderly would feel safe. There would not be any damage done to the roads for the next 30 years. The whole project would cost an approximate amount of Rs 10000 crores and part of the amount would be funded by KFW bank of Germany.
