There are 2 subways within 250mts between Anna Flyover and Thousand Light junction in Chennai. These subways were shut down for the metro rail work on the arterial road is known.
It is now said that the inordinate delay in the opening of these subways has put the pedestrians on the risk. A resident belonging to Thousand Lights mentioned that she was forced to spend Rs 40 for an auto for the sake of crossing the road after alighting at the Church Park bus stop. She then explained how many senior citizens and students have been facing problems due to the closure of the subway for more than 2 years.
For the sake of crossing the road, many people risk their lives by jaywalking at the end of Anna Flyover. Point is the authorities have told that the subway would be reopened every month but it is still closed.
It must be noted that the people have to walk till the traffic signal at the Anna Flyover junction to cross the road in the absence of pedestrian subways. For crossing the road, those from Greams Road must reach Whites Road Anna Salai junction. Only when the traffic police open the barricades at the Peters Road for the vehicles coming from Teynampet to Royapettah to take the right turn, the pedestrians are allowed to cross.
However, the continuous passage of vehicles has resulted in little scope for movement for pedestrians. Over a year back, renovation started and the work has been going on at a slow pace. This was as per a resident of Buddhi Begum Street of Anna Salai.
